Jeff Manto, Joe McEwing and Mark Parent have joined new manager Robin Ventura’s coaching staff with the Chicago White Sox. Manto was the White Sox’s minor league hitting coordinator the last four seasons and will now be the hitting coach. McEwing managed Chicago’s Triple-A affiliate at Charlotte last season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have declined options on pitcher Paul Maholm, catchers Ryan Doumit and Chris Snyder and shortstop Ronny Cedeno. The move allows each player to become a free agent. Maholm was due $9.75 million in salary next season. The 29-year-old lefthander is 53-73 in seven seasons with the Pirates.

At the start of the day, the St. Louis Rams were a distant second as a downtown attraction. Strictly a warmup act before the Cardinals’ World Series parade. Fans who stayed away to establish early position on the parade route missed the Rams’ stunning 31-21 upset of the New Orleans Saints — and a pregame appearance by the crosstown champions.

The Houston Texans know that if they want to reach the playoffs for the first time in franchise history, they’ve got to win divisional games. So far they’ve been perfect in that area. Arian Foster rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown, and Houston shut down rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert and the NFL’s worst offense in a 24-14 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

By the time Reggie Nelson was sprinting down the sideline in the closing seconds, he was just adding to Cincinnati’s streak of getting a defensive touchdown while making the Bengals’ victory look more impressive.
