Miami Marlins left fielder Logan Morrison will undergo arthroscopic surgery Monday to repair a lingering injury to his right knee. The number of drug tests conducted by Major League Baseball rose 3 percent in the past year, when Colorado Rockies catcher Eliezer Alfonzo was the only big leaguer suspended for using a performance-enhancing substance. Alfonzo was banned for 100 games and there was just one positive for PEDs among 3,868 tests, according to the annual report issued Thursday by Dr.

Bobby Valentine is the 45th manager of the Boston Red Sox. The 61-year-old former Rangers and Mets skipper was introduced Thursday during a news conference at Fenway Park. Valentine takes over a team that blew a nine-game lead in the AL wild-card race to miss the playoffs for the second straight season.

The Texas Rangers have traded catcher Taylor Teagarden to the Baltimore Orioles for minor league right-hander Randy Henry and a player to be named. The teams announced the deal on Thursday. Teagarden hit .235 in 14 games for Texas last season. He has played 118 games for the Rangers over the last four years and has thrown out nearly 31 percent of runners who have tried to steal.

The Los Angeles Angels acquired catcher Chris Iannetta from the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday in a trade for right-hander Tyler Chatwood. Ramon Santiago has agreed to a $4.2 million, two-year contract to remain with the Detroit Tigers. The 32-year-old infielder hit .260 in 101 games last season, playing mostly second base and shortstop. He batted .295 after the All-Star break, helping Detroit pull away to win the AL Central title. Santiago agreed to the deal Wednesday.

Texas Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland is recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right wrist. Moreland underwent surgery in Cleveland on Wednesday, when a small pea-shaped bone was removed from the base of his wrist. The Rangers say the estimated recovery time is expected to be eight to 12 weeks.

David DeJesus could become the starting right fielder for the Chicago Cubs after agreeing to a $10 million, two-year contract. “Ultimately we feel that he is an above-average defender in right field. Scott Elarton, a 17-game winner with Houston in 2000 who hasn’t pitched in the majors in three years, was among eight non-roster players the Phillies have invited to spring training. Elarton last pitched professionally in 2010 with Triple-A Charlotte. He’s 56-61 with a 5.29 ERA in 232 career games.

Brewers prospect Santo Manzanillo is recovering after he separated his right shoulder in a car accident in the Dominican Republic. The 22-year-old right-hander was traveling to Milwaukee’s complex in San Pedro de Macoris at the time of Tuesday morning’s accident. The team says he is currently undergoing further tests.

Pitcher-turned-outfielder Adam Loewen has agreed to a minor league contract with the New York Mets. The 27-year-old Loewen, who will attend major league spring training under Tuesday’s deal, was 6 for 32 (.188) for Toronto last season with one home run and four RBIs. He hit .306 at Triple-A Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League with 46 doubles, 17 homers and 85 RBIs.

Right-hander Scott Mathieson has been released by the Philadelphia Phillies, allowing him to sign with a team in Asia. The 27-year-old was 1-4 with a 6.75 ERA in eight starts and seven relief appearances with the Phillies in 2006, 2010 and this year. He didn’t allow a run in four relief outings this year.

The Oakland Athletics have begun exclusive negotiations with the city of Mesa, Ariz., to switch their spring training site from Phoenix. That exclusivity period lasts through May 15, 2012. The A’s say they will discuss with Mesa a move of the team’s spring and year-round minor league operations to Hohokam Park and Fitch Park in Mesa, a suburb of Phoenix where the Chicago Cubs train.

The Braves say right-hander Tim Hudson is expected to be ready for spring training after having surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back. The surgery on Monday was performed by Dr. Stevan Wray in Atlanta. The Braves say Hudson has had discomfort in his back the past two seasons.
