UAB coach Garrick McGee has promoted Jeff Brohm to offensive coordinator and hired John Peterson as offensive line coach. McGee announced the staff changes Tuesday. North Texas football coach Dan McCarney is out of the hospital following a stroke last week. McCarney felt his left side go numb Feb. 12 and was taken to an area hospital. Doctors later confirmed he had a stroke. A university spokesman says McCarney was released last Thursday and has returned to the office for about an hour each day.

A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that the Kansas City Chiefs and cornerback Stanford Routt have agreed to terms on a $19.6 million, three-year deal. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz has hired his son, Brian, away from the New England Patriots to coach the Hawkeyes offensive line. Ferentz also announced Saturday that assistant LeVar Woods has been promoted to linebackers coach. Brian Ferentz played for the Hawkeyes from 2002-05. He spent the last four years with the Patriots, serving as tight ends coach last season.

Incoming Sun Belt Conference Commissioner Karl Benson wants his new league to expand. Benson, the longtime Western Athletic Conference commissioner, was introduced as the Sun Belt’s next leader Thursday. The 60-year-old Benson will replace Wright Water, who is retiring after 12 years.
