Chapel Hill police say the son of new Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey is among three former North Carolina athletes arrested for possession of cocaine. Police say Shane Michael Mularkey was among the three arrested. The 21-year-old Mularkey played in all 13 games for the Tar Heels in 2009, but school spokesman Kevin Best said he left the team after the 2010 season.

The NFL is increasing the number of Thursday night games so more of its teams can play in prime time. Commissioner Roger Goodell said that there will be Thursday night games on the NFL Network from the second to the 15th week of the season, giving all of the league’s teams a chance to appear in prime time on some outlet.

The Oakland Raiders hired seven additional coaches for Dennis Allen’s staff on Thursday, including three who were with the team last year. The Raiders hired former Houston assistant Frank Pollack to replace Bob Wylie as the team’s offensive line coach and former fullback Justin Griffith to be offensive quality control coach.

NFL owners approved a $200 million loan Thursday to help the San Francisco 49ers build a stadium south of Santa Clara. The team plans to bid for future Super Bowls for the 68,000-seat stadium, which will be built adjacent to the 49ers’ facility. “It’s huge,” 49ers CEO Jed York said of the league’s approval.

St. Louis proposes $124M to improve dome (AP)

The St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission unveiled a plan Wednesday that calls for $124 million in improvements to the Edward Jones Dome in hopes of making sure the city doesn’t lose another NFL team. The commission had faced a Wednesday deadline to deliver the plan to the St. Louis Rams, which leases the dome.

Longtime NFL assistant coach Bill Muir followed through on his plans to retire, informing the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday that he wouldn’t return for a 35th season in the league. Tim Tebow has canceled an appearance at a revival organized by a controversial Ohio preacher, a spokesman for the star athlete said Wednesday. The Denver Broncos quarterback and dedicated Christian had been scheduled to speak at a three-day Columbus event in March led by televangelist Rod Parsley. Tebow’s brother Robbie said in a phone interview that he was canceling the talk.

Parry to ref Super Bowl for first time (AP)

John Parry is back at the Super Bowl, this time as the referee. A 12-year veteran official in his fifth season as a referee, Parry worked the 2007 championship game as a side judge. He was promoted to referee later that year. Parry has officiated nine playoff games, including one conference championship.

A Super Bowl mistake cost Osi Umenyiora roughly the price of a championship ring. The Giants defensive end was fined $20,000 by the NFL on Wednesday, a few hours after he missed a mandatory morning media session. “I misunderstood the schedule,” Umenyiora said in a statement released by the team.

Tennessee Titans receiver Kenny Britt has pleaded guilty to a downgraded charge stemming from an arrest in New Jersey. Britt entered the plea in Hoboken Municipal Court to a charge of disturbing the peace and paid a $1,500 fine. Britt faced several charges in the June arrest at a car wash, where police said they suspected him of carrying a marijuana cigar.

Caldwell went 26-22 in three years with Indianapolis, including a Super Bowl appearance.

Broncos hire Del Rio as def. coordinator (AP)

John Fox and Jack Del Rio are together again. The Denver Broncos announced Friday night they had agreed to terms with Del Rio to become the club’s new defensive coordinator. Del Rio was Fox’s first defensive coordinator in Carolina in 2002 before leaving after one year to coach the Jacksonville Jaguars, who fired him in November.
